Carer Adjustment Payment
This is a one-off payment to families who can’t get other income support when the family is going through significant adjustment because of the care needs of a child. You might be able to get this payment if you care for a child aged under 7 years who has recently been diagnosed with severe disability or a severe medical condition.
Carer Allowance
This allowance provides an income supplement for carers or parents who provide daily care for an adult or dependent child or children. You may be able to get this payment if you care for someone with disability or a medical condition, or a frail older person, and if you also work or study.
Carer Payment
This payment provides income support if you can’t work because you care for someone. You might be able to get this payment if you provide constant care in a private home for someone with a severe disability or severe medical condition or who is frail and elderly, and if you aren’t away from them for more than 25 hours a week to work.
Carer Supplement
This supplement is a yearly payment to help with the cost of caring for a person. You might be able to get this payment if you get a Carer Payment or a Carer Allowance.
Australian Human Rights Commission
The Australian Human Rights Commission promotes disability rights to build a more accessible and inclusive society. The Commission has a guide to the laws that protect all people from discrimination and information on access to justice for people with disability that you can access on their website. You can also make a human rights complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission. The complaints process is free.
Disabled People’s Organisations Australia
The Disabled People’s Organisations (DPO) Australia promotes the human rights and freedoms of all people with disability.
Young Carer Bursary Program
This is financial help to reduce your need to have a part-time job if you are studying or training and taking care of someone. You might be able to get this payment if you are aged 12–25 years or under, in high school, or at university or TAFE.
