Disability Inclusion Guide for Local Government updated

Australia’s Disability Strategy
Michael Theo, Australian actor, voice over artist and disability advocate, introduces the updated Disability Inclusion Guide for Local Government at the Australian Local Government Association National General Assembly.

The updated Disability Inclusion Guide for Local Government is now available.

Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) developed the Guide with support from the Australian Government under Australia's Disability Strategy. It gives councils clear advice, tools and resources to help make communities more inclusive and accessible.

The Guide is useful if you work in local government, advocate for disability inclusion, or want to understand how councils can improve accessibility. The Guide includes tools, resources and examples from across Australia.

What’s in the Guide?

The Guide provides practical advice and useful resources across a range of local government responsibilities, including:

  • Leadership and decision-making

  • Employment and procurement

  • Engagement and communication

  • Infrastructure and services

  • Community safety and emergency management

  • Disability inclusion planning.

The Guide includes examples of disability inclusion work from councils across Australia. These examples can help councils learn from each other and identify approaches that may work in their own communities.

The updated Guide was launched at the ALGA National General Assembly on 24 June 2026. At the launch, local government speakers talked about practical ways councils can improve disability inclusion and drive positive change in the everyday lives of community members.
