The 7 outcomes
Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021–2031 has ideas about how to make life better for people with disability. It talks about doing better in 7 main areas. We call these the outcome areas.
Each outcome area has one main outcome. These are in the Strategy.
Why the Strategy has outcomes
Outcomes are what we want to achieve. They are the goals. When we know the outcomes we want, we can then plan and do things to get them.
Outcomes also help us check how well things are going. We can use the outcomes to track what changes over time. They help us keep track of:
- what we’re doing to get the outcomes
- when we get the outcomes
- where we need to do better.
To help get the outcomes we want, the Strategy has policy priorities for each outcome. The priorities are the important things everyone needs to focus on to make change.
Employment and financial security
People with disability told us the area of working and earning money needs to improve.
We want people with disability to have the chance to have a job and enough money so they can:
- live well
- plan for their future
- have choice and control of their own lives.
We included this outcome in the Strategy:
- People with disability have economic security, enabling them to plan for the future and exercise choice and control over their lives.
Inclusive homes and communities
People with disability told us the area of inclusive and accessible homes and communities needs to improve.
We want people with disability to live in homes and communities that:
- meet their needs
- are accessible
- are inclusive.
If something is accessible, everyone can use it. This might be:
- a place or a building
- transport
- a service
- information
- a website.
If something is inclusive, everyone can take part.
We included this outcome in the Strategy:
- People with disability live in inclusive, accessible and well-designed homes and communities.
Safety, rights and justice
People with disability told us the area of rights for fair treatment and safety needs to improve.
Rights are rules about how everybody should be treated:
- fairly
- equally.
We want people with disability to:
- feel safe
- have their rights protected
- be treated the same as other people in the community.
We included this outcome in the Strategy:
- The rights of people with disability are promoted, upheld and protected, and people with disability feel safe and enjoy equality before the law.
Personal and community support
People with disability told us the area of getting support needs to improve.
We want people with disability to have access to supports and services that help them to be:
- part of their community
- independent.
We included this outcome in the Strategy:
- People with disability have access to a range of supports to assist them to live independently and engage in their communities.
Education and training
People with disability told us the area of learning and skills development needs to improve.
We want people with disability to have access to and get what they need from:
- school
- learning
- training.
We included this outcome in the Strategy:
- People with disability achieve their full potential through education and learning.
Health and wellbeing
People with disability told us the area of health and wellbeing needs to improve.
We want people with disability to:
- be healthy
- enjoy the life they live.
We included this outcome in the Strategy:
- People with disability attain the highest possible health and wellbeing outcomes throughout their lives.
Community attitudes
People with disability told us the area of community attitudes needs to improve.
Attitudes are what you:
- think
- feel
- believe.
We want community attitudes to:
- support treating people with disability as equals
- be inclusive
- let people with disability take part.
We included this outcome in the Strategy:
- Community attitudes support equality, inclusion and participation in society for people with disability.
How we will get the outcomes
We must all work together to get the outcomes in the Strategy.
This includes:
- people with disability
- governments
- the community
- businesses
- organisations
- services.
The Strategy includes what we will do to help create change. This includes:
- action plans
- checks on how well things are going.
