Kimberley

photo of Kimberley and Mike

Kimberley has down syndrome. Mike, her dad, helps care for her. Becoming independent is important to Kimberley.

Kimberley volunteers at an equestrian centre, feeding and grooming the horses. She also enjoys dancing, film production and craft classes. Mike is her transport to these activities but is finding this harder as he gets older.

Sometimes I need to have a little more help with that.

Mike: As I’m getting older I find it harder to drive and we have been Kimberley’s form of transport.

Finding transport for her is one of the big things to use the Disability Gateway for.

[Music plays and image changes to show Kimberley looking at the Disability Gateway website on her tablet]

Kimberley: Disability Gateway is a website.

[Image changes to show Kimberley sitting at a table talking to the camera]

It provides more information into my independence.

[Music plays and images move through to show Kimberley cooking pancakes in the kitchen, and the camera zooms in on the pancakes in the frypan, and then Kimberley smiling]

Mike: Perhaps the best thing I like about the Disability Gateway is the Easy Read section because Kimberley can find the information for herself.

[Music plays and image changes to show a close view of Kimberley looking down, and then the image changes to show Kimberley talking to the camera]

Kimberley: The Disability Gateway is an easy read.

[Image changes to show Mike giving Kimberley a hug and both of them smiling at the camera]

I can actually understand it all.
